Hey Reader,

Last week was exhausting but rewarding. I submitted my app to Apple for review! There's still a lot of work to do but this is a major milestone.

We are one week away from the end of the quarter. Perfect time for reflecting. Today's essay is about Personal Retreats. They changed my life, and since you’re already a subscriber, I’d love to share the exact Wheel of Life Obsidian/Markdown template I use:

Happy reflecting,
Jorge

🪞 A Personal Retreat can change your life

For the first time in my life, I’m forging my path instead of walking someone else’s road.

As I near one year of doing Personal Retreats, I’m certain reflection is the door to a fulfilling life.

A Personal Retreat is a break from routine to reflect on the last quarter and get clarity on what’s next.

I learned about Personal Retreats from Mike Schmitz. He recently wrote a post describing the whole process:

The Power of the Personal Retreat

Here’s how I plan for my Personal Retreat:

Before

I commit to my Personal Retreat by picking a location.

I have experimented with different locations, from libraries to a guest house at a bonsai museum. The key is to get out of the routine.

As for the duration, a day and a half is enough. I could squeeze it into one day (8 hours), but the best is to let the insights land and my brain to recharge.

During

I create a new note in Obsidian, and go through the following phases:

  • Review (2 hours): Look back at the past quarter and revisit my priorities.
  • Reflect (4 hours): Rate 9 areas of my life, and do a retrospective.
  • Design (2 hours): Shape my intentions, habits, and routines based on the insights I gathered.

Staying away from email, social media, and notifications guarantees focus. ## My recommendation If you’re new to Personal Retreats, don’t try to do everything at once. Start small and iterate.

If I had to pick one thing to focus on it would be the Wheel of Life reflection.

It’s mind blowing to think that 32 hours of reflection changed my life in one year. I shifted from running without direction to being close to launching my first mobile app as an Indie iOS Developer. This is a dream I have had for years!

🎨 Indie life

  • Last Friday I sent my submission to the App Store. To ensure I can have the app ready for the Shipaton I switched my priority to add the paywall to my app.
  • While my app is being reviewed I'll work on the stats and mascot features.
  • Once everything is ready, I'll do a silent launch as I gather feedback.

🌊 Internet bits

Jimmy Fallon's DOAC Interview: I was inspired by Jimmy Fallon's determination to get into Saturday Night Live. And how he cannot envision a future where that didn't happen. Achieving the "big goal" didn't let him feeling empty, but opened doors to more experiences. That's an approach of constant experimentation and learning.

The 1% Practice Small shifts. Lasting change. April 12, 2026 Hey Reader, When was the last time you were in a liminal space? This is an in-between territory where the old rules governing our choices no longer apply. It's a space of pure uncertainty and potential magic. I've been there for the last three weeks. I signed a job offer for a remote company that I admire and am passionate about working for. But the process got paused because of unexpected paperwork from the Employer of Record they...

The 1% Practice Small shifts. Lasting change. March 28, 2026 Hey Reader, It's been a while, and I have a lot to catch you up on. The first quarter of 2026 went by flying! After closing out 2025, I kicked off January by diving back into job hunting after 8 years. It meant adapting to a completely different reality and letting go of limiting beliefs. Then just as I was getting closer to signing a work contract, another challenge came up: renewing my remote worker residency permit in Portugal....

The 1% Practice Small shifts. Lasting change. November 12, 2025 Hey Reader, Have you ever felt stuck at the beginning of something great? I stayed stuck for years after university. Always seeking validation before starting. Going through a layoff gave me the push to start building without asking for permission. I messed up a lot, and that's good. The moment you start making mistakes it means you are getting unstuck. I've condensed this essay for your inbox. Want the full story?[Read or listen...
