Coding setbacks, life-changing apps, and a FedEx story

Hey Reader,

Remember last week I said the coding phase of my app is pretty much done. I was wrong!

I spent most of the week refactoring the core of the app: the notification system.

The good news: it’s now working, and I’d love your feedback. If you’re on iOS 26, you can join as a beta tester here:

My app's name is Minder, and it is mindful random reminder app. The purpose is for you to develop new habits little by little. Some examples of Minders you can create:

  • Drink some water
  • How am I talking to or relating to myself right now?
  • What am I grateful for right now?

Thanks for the support,
Jorge

📱 9 mobile apps that are quietly changing my life

Life-changing books are easy to spot, you notice as soon as you finish reading them. Mobile apps are trickier, what does it mean for an app to be life changing?

The value of an app comes from the habit it helps you build which over time shapes different parts of your identity.

For instance, using Duolingo once won’t do anything for you. But use it daily for three months and suddenly you’re on the path of becoming a polyglot.

As I build my first mobile app my biggest hope is for it to change people’s lives. Which made me wonder: What apps have changed my life?

Whether we notice it or not, we “hire” mobile apps to complete a “job”. The apps I list below are preceded by their intention with a strong: I want to…

Daily Routines

  • Calm: Be present and learn bits of wisdom.
  • Chronicling: Know when was the last time I did something.
  • Routinery: Focus on what matters during the mornings.
  • YNAB: Be mindful of my spending habits.
  • Pedometer: Be in movement and go outside.
  • Fitbod: Train my muscles to sustain healthy aging.

Knowledge Management

Cooking

Crouton: Store and retrieve my favorite recipes in an easy and smart way.

These apps reflect different aspects of my identity and what I care about. That’s the bar I am aiming for with my own app.

Steve Jobs said that computers are like a bicycle for our minds. Which mobile apps are pushing your mind bicycle forward?

🎨 Indie life

It was an eventful week. Did a lot of progress, but I don't have the app ready to launch in the store and that's troublesome if I want to submit it to the Shipaton.

I am excited about the app icon, my wife and I designed it with Apple's new design in mind:

🌊 Internet bits

  • [Outliers] Fred Smith: The Story of FedEx: The story behind FedEx is inspiring because all the adversities Fred Smith overcomes and doubles down on the idea of letting go of control and adapting: "In combat, the plan falls apart in the first five minutes. What matters is how fast you adapt."
  • Demon Slayer Infinity Castle: If you like the Demon Slayer anime (it is a good first anime to watch) you will love the movie. It mets all the expectations: storytelling, astonishing animation, soul-touching soundtrack.

The 1% Practice Small shifts. Lasting change. April 12, 2026 Hey Reader, When was the last time you were in a liminal space? This is an in-between territory where the old rules governing our choices no longer apply. It's a space of pure uncertainty and potential magic. I've been there for the last three weeks. I signed a job offer for a remote company that I admire and am passionate about working for. But the process got paused because of unexpected paperwork from the Employer of Record they...

The 1% Practice Small shifts. Lasting change. March 28, 2026 Hey Reader, It's been a while, and I have a lot to catch you up on. The first quarter of 2026 went by flying! After closing out 2025, I kicked off January by diving back into job hunting after 8 years. It meant adapting to a completely different reality and letting go of limiting beliefs. Then just as I was getting closer to signing a work contract, another challenge came up: renewing my remote worker residency permit in Portugal....

The 1% Practice Small shifts. Lasting change. November 12, 2025 Hey Reader, Have you ever felt stuck at the beginning of something great? I stayed stuck for years after university. Always seeking validation before starting. Going through a layoff gave me the push to start building without asking for permission. I messed up a lot, and that's good. The moment you start making mistakes it means you are getting unstuck. I've condensed this essay for your inbox. Want the full story?[Read or listen...
